Mission Statement
The Pakistan Institute of Circadian Health and Medicine (PICHeM) is dedicated to advancing the science and clinical application of circadian biology to improve human health and wellbeing. The institute promotes research, education, and clinical innovation that align human physiology with natural biological rhythms. By integrating chronobiology with lifestyle medicine, preventive medicine, and public health, PICHeM seeks to address the growing burden of chronic diseases, mental health disorders, and lifestyle-related conditions through circadian-aligned approaches to health and healing.
A key pillar of the institute’s work is the promotion of SWIPE for Healthy Lifestyle, a synchronized lifestyle framework developed to help individuals align their daily habits with the body’s biological rhythms and the natural environment. By emphasizing rhythm-based living, SWIPE integrates evidence-based lifestyle practices—including nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress regulation, social connection, and environmental synchronization—to restore physiological balance and promote long-term health.
As a scientific affiliate of the Pakistan Association of Lifestyle Medicine (PALM), PICHeM aims to establish Pakistan as a regional leader in circadian health, chrono nutrition, chronotherapy, and rhythm-based medicine, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among clinicians, scientists, educators, and policymakers to promote a healthier and more resilient society.
Objectives of PICHeM
1. Promote Research in Entrainment Concept Circadian Science
Support and conduct multidisciplinary research on circadian rhythms, chronobiology, and their influence on metabolism, cardiovascular health, immune function, mental health, and chronic disease.
2. Advance Circadian Medicine in Clinical Practice
Develop evidence-based clinical frameworks that incorporate circadian principles into patient care, including chronotherapy, sleep optimization, chrono nutrition, and rhythm-aligned lifestyle interventions. Currently we are maintaining a data of Physicians applying rules of chronobiology in their practice.
3. Promote the SWIPE Framework for Healthy Lifestyle
Advance the scientific understanding and practical application of SWIPE for Healthy Lifestyle as a circadian-aligned lifestyle model that integrates daily behavioural patterns with the body’s intrinsic biological clocks to enhance health, resilience, and disease prevention.
4. Education and Capacity Building
Provide virtual training programs, workshops, certification, and courses for healthcare professionals, researchers, and students in circadian health, chronobiology, and SWIPE-based lifestyle interventions. This model is taught in undergraduate and post graduate courses of our university.
5. Integrate Circadian Principles into Lifestyle Medicine
Collaborate with the Pakistan Association of Lifestyle Medicine (PALM) to embed circadian alignment and SWIPE-based approaches within lifestyle medicine education, clinical practice, and preventive health initiatives.
6. Public Awareness and Health Promotion
Promote awareness about circadian health through public education campaigns, community programs, and digital resources that encourage daily routines aligned with natural biological rhythms and healthy lifestyle behaviours.
7. Foster National and International Collaboration
Develop partnerships with universities, research institutes, and global organizations working in chronobiology, sleep medicine, lifestyle medicine, and integrative health.
8. Support Evidence-Based Policy Development
Provide scientific expertise to policymakers to encourage circadian-friendly environments in healthcare systems, workplaces, schools, and communities.
9. Establish a National Centre of Excellence
Position PICHeM as a leading centre in Pakistan for research, education, and innovation in circadian health and rhythm-based medicine, contributing to global scientific advancement in this emerging field.
